Honored to Serve
Dear Neighbors,
It’s my profound honor to share being named the 2026 Legislative Social Worker Icon by the National Association of Social Workers (California) at their event this month.
As a Doctor of Social Work and former foster youth, this recognition reflects not just policy passage but also the incredible urgency and collective action, especially when it comes to protecting vulnerable children and strengthening their support agencies.

My lived experience and our ongoing efforts to reform failing systems, including Alameda County’s Department of Children and Family Services, remain at the center of the “why” to my service in the State Senate.
Throughout my legislative priorities, I have ensured that those too often overlooked and without a voice… individuals with disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf, or developmentally disabled, seniors, immigrants, and families living on the margin… are not left behind by the systems meant to protect. My focus remains on building a more equitable California where every person, regardless of economic circumstance, has a fair and dignified opportunity to thrive.

DCFS/Foster Youth Accountability Taskforce – This Friday: POSTPONED
2026 Legislative Social Worker Icon [From NASW-California]
Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab’s demand for reform following critical audits of child welfare services has been exemplary. More importantly, her legislative leadership, particularly through Senate Bill 1345, represents a critical step toward ensuring foster youth receive the timely care, stable placements, and family connections they deserve. Her work to strengthen safety nets for children and families reflects the social work principle of advocating for systemic change that uplifts the most vulnerable.
Dr. Wahab’s broader career reflects a deep and consistent commitment to social work values:
-
A Voice for the Voiceless: Her historic election as the first Afghan American and first Muslim woman elected to the California State Senate has given hope to communities long underrepresented in government. Throughout her campaign and tenure, she has faced adversity with resilience, proving that representation matters and that our democracy is strengthened when all voices are heard.
-
A Legislator with a Social Work Lens: As a former Hayward City Councilmember and now as State Senator, she has championed affordable housing, tenant protections, and economic justice for working families. Her service on committees including Health, Human Services, and Housing, and her continued advocacy for renters and families experiencing housing instability, demonstrates her understanding that social justice requires action across multiple fronts.
-
A Champion for Prevention and Dignity: Her work on behalf of foster youth is part of a larger commitment to prevention-focused policy. As she has stated, foster youth are disproportionately at risk of homelessness, and her advocacy ensures that resources are directed toward stabilizing and supporting this population. This approach aligns directly with social work’s commitment to addressing root causes and promoting human dignity.
For these reasons, Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab is widely recognized as deserving of the NASW-CA Legislative Social Worker Icon Award. Presenting this award at Lobby Days, before an audience of social workers and students, reflects how social work values, forged in personal experience and translated into legislative action, can create lasting, systemic changes.
In addition to this work, if you need assistance navigating a state agency or accessing services, my office is here to help and can connect you with the resources you need.
Thank you for your continued engagement and commitment to improving outcomes for children and families across our communities.

Sincerely,
Dr. Aisha Wahab |
