Senator Aisha Wahab’s Gender Perspective Judging Bill Signed Into Law
Sacramento, CA — California State Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab’s (D-Silicon Valley) SB 1356, Gender Perspective Judging, was signed into law and requires the Judicial Council, when developing any training on gender bias, to consider the role of gender in court proceedings and meeting the needs of litigants in unique situations of vulnerability.
“Data and research show our justice system does not always consider the unique circumstance of women involved in our judicial system,” said Dr. Wahab. “This bill will level the playing field for women by increasing the balance of justice for those involved in any legal action—including employment issues—and mitigate the over penalization of women involved in criminal cases.”
SB 1356 is supported by California Employment Lawyers Association, California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, Consumer Attorneys of California, Equal Rights Advocates, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, VALOR, and Ann Ravel—former Chair of the California Fair Political Practices and Commissioner on the Federal Election Commission. SB 1356 becomes law on January 1, 2025.
