In addition to my annual report on our accomplishments in Sacramento this session, I will recognize twelve Local Hero Award winners selected from throughout the 10th Senate District. Assemblymember Bill Quirk, Assemblymember Kansen Chu, and I will be hosting a Senior Scam Stopper Seminar at the Fremont Multi-Service Senior Center with the Contractors State License Board.

Learn how to protect yourself from various types of fraud relating to financial, home improvement, insurance, telemarketing, and real estate scams.

The seminar will be held on Friday, June 29th at the Fremont Multi-Service Senior Center-40086 Paseo Padre Pkwy- in Fremont. It will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

This year we celebrate the 48th Anniversary of Earth Day. It began as a nationally-recognized annual event in 1970 after a devastating oil spill off the coast of California.

The 10th Senate District is one of the most diverse districts in the state of California, and we have all greatly benefited from the positive impact African Americans have had in our communities.

In order to honor individuals who continue to make a positive impact, I am hosting my 7th Annual African-American Heritage Leadership Awards on Thursday, February 8th at the Council Chambers of Union City’s City Hall at 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road in Union City. The ceremony will be from 3:30 pm to 5pm. Doors open at 3pm.

Dear Friends,

With the holiday season upon us and 2017 winding down, December is an appropriate time to reflect on the past 12 months and look ahead with hope and optimism as the New Year approaches.

The California Legislature passed several important bills in 2017 to begin repairing our streets and highways; to provide a dedicated fund for financing affordable housing and approving a housing bond measure; to continue California's global leadership position in the fight against climate change; and to put a water and parks bond on the November 2018 ballot.

Student loan debt in the United States tops $1.3 trillion, considerably more than credit card debt and auto loan debt.  More than 40 million Americans are saddled with this burden.  They include recent graduates, mid-career professionals and seniors who co-signed onto loans.  But unlike federal loans, many private loans do not provide borrowers with helpful repayment options.  In fact, borrowers who default on their private loans can see 25 percent of their paychecks garnished by lenders.
