Flex Alert – Help California conserve energy

August 18, 2020

Dear Friend,

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) issued a statewide Flex Alert that calls for voluntary electricity conservation from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. A Flex Alert is issued by the CAISO when the electricity grid is under stress because of generation or transmission outages, or from persistent hot temperatures.

All consumers are urged to conserve energy while the Flex Alert is in effect to Wednesday August 19 during the late afternoon and early evening when the grid is expected to be the most stressed due to higher electricity demand.

Consumers are asked to turn off unnecessary lights and use major appliances like dishwashers and washing machines before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. and set air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher. These actions are encouraged to prevent future emergency measures, including rotating power outages.

Rotating outages are not Public Safety Power Shutoffs, which are conducted during specific high fire threat conditions. Rotating outages are determined by CAISO, and power utilities are required to implement these outages when CAISO deems the demand on the statewide power grid is expected to exceed available energy supply.

The CAISO is working closely with California utilities and neighboring power systems to manage strain on the power grid and to keep it at full capacity. For more information, go to www.flexalert.org.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve you in the California Legislature.

Sincerely,

Bob Wieckowski
Senator, District 10
