Wieckowski to recognize local leaders in 5th-Annual Asian-Pacific Islander (API) Ceremony

Union City – Senator Bob Wieckowski’s (D-Fremont) 5th – Annual Asian-Pacific Islander American Leadership Awards Ceremony will focus on local leaders and an organization making a positive impact in the district.  This year’s ceremony will take place at 12 p.m., Friday, June 12 at the Union City Hall Council Chambers located at 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road in Union City.

“These community leaders have had a tremendous impact on our lives.  From libraries to schools, they have strengthened our public services.  They have created cultural festivals and events that provide greater understanding and social ties in the neighborhoods in our 10th Senate District and beyond,” Wieckowski said.  “This is one of the most culturally diverse districts in the state, and I am proud to recognize individuals and organizations committed to making it a great place to live, work, and play.”

This year’s honorees are:

  • Filipino Advocates for Justice, they were instrumental in rally for the Itliong-Vera Cruz Elementary School name change in Union City.
  • Cossette Sun, a member of the Taiwanese American Federation of Northern California, and major supporter to the Campaign for the Castro Valley Library.
  • John Hsieh, founder of the Asian-American Heritage Festival in the Tri-City area, and host of an annual Thanksgiving dinner in Newark.
  • Dharam and Vijay Salwan, long-time community activists in Fremont.
  • Peter Yoon, a Santa Clara Library Commissioner and labor leader.
