If you've attended in the past, you know that this event is a district tradition that our community looks forward to attending every year. In addition to my annual report on our accomplishments in Sacramento this session, I will recognize nine Local Hero Award winners selected from throughout the 10th Senate District. Student loan debt in the United States tops $1.3 trillion, considerably more than credit card debt and auto loan debt.  More than 40 million Americans are saddled with this burden.  They include recent graduates, mid-career professionals and seniors who co-signed onto loans.  But unlike federal loans, many private loans do not provide borrowers with helpful repayment options.  In fact, borrowers who default on their private loans can see 25 percent of their paychecks garnished by lenders.

As you may know, May is Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. In order to honor API leaders who continue to make a positive impact in our community, I am hosting my 7th Annual API Heritage Leadership Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 12th at the Milpitas Unified School District Board Room, 1331 E Calaveras Blvd Building 500 in Milpitas. The ceremony will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

We will be honoring prominent API leaders from our community. The honorees include:

The 10th Senate District is one of the most diverse districts in the state of California, and we have all greatly benefited from the positive impact African Americans have had in our communities.

In order to honor individuals who continue to make a positive impact, I am hosting my 6th Annual African-American Heritage Leadership Awards on Friday, February 24th at San Lorenzo Library at 395 Paseo Grande in San Lorenzo.

The ceremony will be from 3:30 pm to 5pm.

Doors open at 3pm.

Dear Neighbor,

The California Legislature recently concluded its 2015-2016 session with several key bills to improve conditions and wages for workers, provide more access to higher education, increase affordable housing and protect the environment.

For the second straight year, Governor Jerry Brown signed all of my bills that were approved by the Legislature. In this update, I am highlighting some of those bills so you can learn how my work and accomplishments are making a positive difference in the lives of California residents.

The California Legislature is half way through this year's session and I am pleased to report that the Senate approved several of my significant bills and they are now in the Assembly for final consideration.

Below, is a brief digest of the bills I am authoring to help financially distressed families, especially seniors, better protect their home equity; to remove barriers to accessory dwelling units; to restrict the tobacco industry's marketing to children; to combat false advertising; and to add protections for consumers and workers in forced binding arbitration contracts.
