Welcome

This year marks the 47th anniversary of Earth Day.

After a devastating oil spill off the coast of California, Congress took the opportunity to establish Earth Day in 1970 as a nationally recognized annual event.

Much progress in protecting our environment is being made and none of it would be possible without the work and research of scientists in the United States and around the world.  This year, March for Science, a global movement to defend the vital role science plays in our health, safety, economy and government will coincide with Earth Day activities.  Two local events, March the Hayward Shoreline and March for Science Silicon Valley, will take place this Saturday.

The National Park Service is hosting National Park Week, providing free entry to national parks this weekend.

Below, is a list of several Earth Day events occurring in our local communities:

  • Castro Valley - Residents are invited to participate in a community cleanup on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to noon.

As chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, I am committed to protecting our environment and advancing California's position as a global leader on climate change issues.  Already this year, my committee has passed important bills and resolutions to protect our environment against adverse actions at the federal level and to raise awareness of California's ability to set its own Clean Air Act regulations.

Whether it's on Earth Day or throughout the year, please take a few moments to join me to help clean-up our planet.

SB 1241 ensures California law governs arbitration proceedings on employment contracts
August 31, 2016

Sacramento – The state Legislature today approved a major arbitration bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to protect California workers from two of the worst kinds of provisions found buried in arbitration clauses.  The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature.

SB 1241 targets both choice of venue provisions that require a worker to arbitrate in a different state and choice of law provisions that intentionally pick a different state’s law to control the arbitration.  This allows the companies to circumvent California law in order to disadvantage California workers.
