Bay Area Biosolids to Energy Coalition supports Wieckowski bill to help reduce landfill waste

Sacramento – The California Senate Energy, Utility and Communications Committee today passed a bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to create a competitive grant program to convert biosolids – the natural by-product of wastewater treatment – to clean energy.  SB 1213 will help the state accomplish several of its environmental goals and is supported by the Bay Area Biosolids to Energy Coalition (BAB2E), a joint powers agency, consisting of 19 wastewater treatment agencies.

Sacramento – Joined by legal aid advocates representing non-profits across California, State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) urged members of a Senate budget subcommittee today to push for an increased investment in the state’s Equal Access Fund, a fund used to provide legal services to some of California’s neediest residents.  Wieckowski continues to lead a bipartisan effort to increase funding for legal aid in California, which tops the nation in the number of people living in poverty.

NEWARK - State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) will honor three African-American leaders in the 10th Senate District at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 25 at the Newark City Hall Council Chambers, 37101 Newark Blvd.

“The three individuals I am recognizing are making important contributions to the African-American community and our region through education, mentoring, research, community service and social and recreational programs,” Senator Wieckowski said.  “They clearly believe in civic engagement and volunteering for the greater good of the community.”

In order to honor individuals who continue to make a positive impact, I am hosting my 5th Annual African-American Heritage Leadership Awards on Thursday, February 25th at Newark City Hall at 37101 Newark Blvd in Newark. The ceremony will be from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Coastal Conservancy receives $3 million grant in Prop. 1 funds to remove invasive Spartina from bay wetlands

Hayward – A long-term project to remove the invasive Spartina, a weed that adversely impacts endangered species, tidal mudflats and shorebird foraging habitat, is getting additional funding, as a result of a California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) $3 million grant to the state Coastal Conservancy.
